Rookie musher from Chicago crashes during Iditarod race

w_moon125x125.gifANCHORAGE, Alaska  -- Rookie musher Pat Moon of Chicago was injured when he crashed his sled into a tree Tuesday while competing in the 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Belgian musher Sam Deltour found Moon unconscious on the trail, attended to him and then checked on the 33-year-old man's team, according to Iditarod spokesman Chas St. George.

Deltour said Moon soon regained consciousness. He was flown to Providence Hospital in Anchorage, where he received a checkup.

The race spokesman said Moon's 15 dogs were not hurt but he has been scratched from the race.
Moon had decided to take on the more than 1,150 miles of frozen trails even though he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last year. He underwent chemotherapy in the summer.

Cops: Man dies in fiery crash while fleeing burglary

A man died in a fiery crash early today in Plainfield when the stolen Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving crashed as he fled from a suspected burglary, Plainfield police said.

An officer, responding to a liquor store burglar alarm on the 16200 block of Lincoln Highway, saw broken glass in front of the business and the Tahoe nearby about 2 a.m., Police Chief Bill Doster said.

The officer approached the Tahoe, which pulled away and headed south on Lily Cache Road. The officer initially chased the vehicle but "terminated pursuit due to the high rate of speed and dangerous road conditions," Doster said.

The officer eventually caught up with the burning vehicle, which had crashed into several trees on the east side of the road on Lily Cache Road south of Lincoln Highway, police said.

The Tahoe had turned over and then caught fire after hitting the trees, according to the Will County coroner's office.

A man given probation just two days ago for criminal damage to property died Tuesday night after plunging into the Chicago River while being chased by police for tagging a building.

Jason Kitchekeg, 26, of Mokena was one of three men being chased by officers for spray-painting a building on Ashland Avenue, police said. A friend said Kitchekeg, a longtime Uptown resident, was likely tagging an abandoned paint manufacturing plant there.

Cops caught two of the men, but Kitchekeg jumped into the river near the 2800 block of South Ashland, officials said.

Aided by a helicopter, the police Marine Unit and Fire Department personnel worked for about 30 minutes to rescue the man after he was spotted at about 6:45 p.m. in the river near Bubbly Creek.

Riders switching from buses to trains because of CTA cuts

Thousands of CTA riders frustrated by longer waits and packed buses have switched to trains since service cuts were imposed last month, new data indicate.

Overall, CTA ridership declined only 1 percent in February compared to February 2009, CTA president Richard Rodriguez told the agency's board today.

But bus ridership was down 4 percent, while rail trips increased 3 percent, Rodriguez said.

Meanwhile, weekend ridership in February grew 5 percent compared to the same month last year.

Weekday trips decreased by 2 percent, or about 37,000 rides a day.

The CTA on Feb. 7 slashed bus service by 18 percent, and rail operations 9 percent, and laid off 1,059 employees to eliminate a projected $95.6 million budget deficit.

There are no plans to restore service or rehire workers, Rodriguez said.

He expressed hope, however, that the Obama administration and Congress will approve a second round of federal stimu...

Immigrant groups marching from West Side downtown

Organizers are hoping a thousand undocumented Chicagoans will face their fears of deportation today and descend on the Federal Plaza to march for comprehensive immigration reform.

This morning, several organizers from the Immigrant Youth Justice League were joined by Latino City Council members in calling for support of another immigration reform rally in Washington D.C. on March 21.

Ald. Roberto Maldonado (26th) was among several officials at a news conference who expressed outrage, saying the Obama administration has not kept a promise to introduce a reform bill within Obama's first year of office.

The protesters will begin assembling at Union Square Park at 11 a.m. and march to the Federal Plaza at 1 p.m.

Judge OKs excluding evidence gathered by NU students

A judge today accepted a request from a man convicted of a 1978 murder to drop much of the controversial evidence pointing to his innocence that was dug up by Northwestern University journalism students.

Judge Diane Gordon Cannon agreed to drop the evidence from a motion for a new trial filed by Anthony McKinney. She asked that McKinney sign an affidavit stating he understood the consequences, explaining that he is being treated in a psychiatric ward.
McKinney was convicted of the 1978 shotgun slaying of a Harvey security guard and has spent more than 30 years in prison for a crime Northwestern journalism students and their professor say he did not commit.

The students, led by professor David Protess of the Medill Innocence Project, uncovered evidence they say proves McKinney could not have killed Donald Lundahl that night. The evidence was included in McKinney's petition for a new trial, but his attorney later sought to remove it because of the controversy...
